    You can try approaching the manager and asking him for a refund. Most places won’t return the money because they want your business and want to have you keep coming back for more work.

    All Testing Stations have to be approved by the Dept. of Transport. Have a look at the failure slip that was issued by the garage where your car failed it’s inspection. There should be details on there as to where to appeal against failure to issue a certificate.
    From what I’ve read though, your vehicle failed not only because of a seat belt but because there was a problem with bulbs.
    Get in touch with your local VOSA office for advice, but if you do appeal, it may cost you a further test fee for an examiner to look at your vehicle.

    I’d write to the centre manager stating that you believe the MOT failure on that part was in appropriate and not within MOT guide lines and that you want a refund, also contact your local MOT department they should be in the yellow pages and see what they say, would be worth mentioning to kwik fit that you’ll be contacting the MOT people. Doubt you’ll get any money back for the light bulbs. If nothing else never use Kwik fit again, I had a similar experience when I went for a tire change was told the shock absorber was faulty, but it had been replaced under 3 months before by the main dealer and the car was less then 3 yrs old, I personally just don’t trust them.
    When taking a car for it’s MOT the best place to take it is to a MOT centre that does not offer repairs of any kind then you know they are not looking for work.

    This won’t help you now, but in future book your car in at a council MOT centre. This is where all the buses, dustbin lorries etc. get their MOT’s done. They’re only open to the public at certain times but well worth using as they only do tests, not repairs (i.e. if your car fails you’d have to take it elswhere to get it fixed). This means they don’t have a vested interest in your car failing so they can rip you off for repairs.

    Kwick or should more commonly be know as "Slowfit" are notoriously bad at customer care and costs.

    They have a huge vested interest that they fail on very minor things and charge at seriously overpriced parts with an inflated labor charge too. I’m not saying that your seatbelt issue was right or wrong, but a trained monkey could replace a seatbelt within 15 minutes. Not an hours charge, let alone a £150 item.

    example, 1. Pug 205 2 door, replace and fitted seatbelt myself within 15 minutes, cost of part £30.

    Example 2. Golf mk3. Replaced full suspension to rear and front of car within an afternoon at home, cost of parts £200. Kwickfit quotation of parts and labour was nearly £600.

    You have a couple of choices, first you could report the test centre to the department of transport. Secondly you could contact trading standards to lodge a complaint.
    Ja.

    I hate to say it, but in fact part of the MoT Test is "Condition of all seat belts fitted." Not 2 out of 3, that’s quite wrong.

    A failure point is if "the locking mechanism of a seat belt does not secure or release the belt as intended." In this case, therefore, the tester may well have been quite right, though your independent garage clearly took a more pragmatic view of it.

    Kwik Fit are indeed notorious for making as much work for themselves as they possibly can, one way or another. Lesson without words, really . . .

    Well you won’t get your original fee back. You took the car to them for an MOT and with the new system you have to pay £50 to have it tested. As you say it failed because there some bulbs out. So you have to pay the fee. With regard to the seat buckle problem they probably quoted for a new seat belt and fitting it. Regulations are very strict now with regard to rear seat belts-if there is any sort of corrosion anywhere near where the seat belt is anchored (for example) then you have to pay to have some welding done to strengthen the position. This has happened to me and although I did not agree with what the garage said you have no option really. They are licensed by the Government to ensure that vehicles are in a safe condition and you cannot really argue with them. The best you can do is to have it examined somewhere else. obtain a written report and submit it to the Department of Transport with an appeal stating your reasons for your complaint. I don’t think you will be successful-Big Brother doesn’t like to admit to mistakes.
    Added later: Whilst not wishing to comment too much on Quik-Fit-I have had quotes from them myself and have to say I was not impressed-they quoted me a high price for fitting new tyres-I declined and took it elsewhere and obtained the same tyres at a third cheaper.

    In actual fact, you’ve been very lucky & Kwik Fit in this instance were correct – see article 5 here;
    http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_510.htm
    If your car has seating for three in the back (and it must do to have three rear belts), then they ALL have to adhere to paragraph 5a;
    "the locking mechanism of a seat belt does not secure or release the belt as intended"
    If the Kwik Fit tester considers that the buckle doesn’t latch as it should (which by your admission it doesn’t), then he is absolutely within his rights to fail the car.

    If it’s fitted, it should work!

    It’s silly of you to argue this point.

    The garage you took it to should not have passed it like that!

    I don’t use Kwik Fit either, for the same reasons as many others have already stated, however, I feel the others are detracting from your initial question, and taking this excellent opportunity to slag of Kwik Fit!

    I would get that harness fixed soon as. Any breakers would have fixed and fitted that for 25% of what you were quoted. Job done!
